Contest closed!!! Winner picked!!!
Caleb came home from school a few weeks ago with a book from the library. He told me he had tried to read it on the bus but got a little sick. I had to ask “What?”, since reading is the LAST thing Caleb EVER wants to do.
It has been a struggle with him since he started reading in Kindergarten. It isn’t that he has trouble reading, it is that there always seems to be something more important or fun for him to do besides read. It is required that he reads at last four times a week for twenty minuets. He has to take AR test on the books that he reads and each nine weeks has to acquire at least ten AR points. The test grades are averaged and then added to his reading grade as one assignment. Every night I reminded him to read. He said I will later, I will in the morning, I will tomorrow. The first two nine weeks he did reach his goal, but that was it, ten points and it was at the last minuet.
That was the case, until he brought home Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. My son read the whole book that week-end. He took the test on Monday at school and got the full three AR points. I was thrilled. He asked if I could get on-line and find more books by Jeff Kinney. Of course I can and did! I then emailed the publishers and they agreed to mail me a copy of the new book Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney.
About the books:The books are written as if it is the journal of Greg Heffley. The reader gets to follow the adventures of this sixth grader through fun cartoon pictures and real to life situations. They are funny and fast paced! They will keep you laughing and wanting to read more.
The back of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw reads; “Let’s face it: Greg Heffley will never change his wimpy ways. Somebody just needs to explain that to Greg’s father. You see, Frank Heffley actually thinks he can get his son to toughen up, and he enlists Greg in organized sports and other “manly” endeavors. Of course, Greg is able to easily sidestep his father’s efforts to change him. But when Greg’s dad threatens to send him to military academy, Greg realizes he has to shape up . . . or get shipped out.”
The books are for ages 9-12 and can be found at book stores everywhere.
Not only did they send a copy for Caleb, they also sent a copy for me to giveaway here on my blog.

My parents didn’t read to me as a child, however I am NOT making that same mistake! So, I will tell you my favorite children’s book NOW. It is Roxaboxen by Alice McLerran. I love, love, love that book and so do my children. It makes me remember being a child and creating homes and towns with my imagination. Love it!

I loved as a child (non chapter books) The Berenstein Bears & the Spooky Old Tree. As far as chapter books go, I loved the Babysitter Club books. And if you would like a suggestion (Molly is having a girl, right?) there is a book called Pinkalicious. My girls love, love, love this book. I think most girls do, but now Callee walks around saying “pink, pink, pink!” It is something I don’t mind hearing all the time because I know she is listening when I read & getting something out of it.

Definitely enter me! Let’s see….my favorite picture book as a kid was probably The Rainbow Fish. I loved it, still have it.
As I got older, I started reading a ton on my own. I loved the library and still love to read. Harry Potter was big around when I was like…8 or 9. Loved those!

My hippie parents refused to buy a t.v. so we grew up reading a box of books a week - from the library - loaded onto my mom’s bike. We must have looked pretty funny riding around town. Because I read so much, it’s difficult to pick a favorite. I loved all the Laura Ingles Wilder books - Little House on the Praire - was a favorite. I was a huge Nancy Drew fan, as well.
